Privacy policy

This app exists so hikers can tell each other what a trailhead looks like right now. It is built to know as little about you as possible. Here is the whole story in plain language.
If you just look or post reports
- We store nothing about you. A report contains only the trailhead you picked, the buttons you tapped, your note if you wrote one, and the time. No name, no account, no location, no device details.
- Your location never leaves your phone. If you allow location, your phone uses it to sort trailheads by distance. Only the trailhead you confirm is sent to us, never your coordinates.
- A report does say that someone was at that trailhead around that time. It does not say who. Times are shown rounded, never to the second.
- Photos are optional and public. If you attach one, your phone shrinks it before sending, which also removes the location and camera details phones hide inside photos. Please keep people and license plates out of the frame. Anyone can flag a photo, and a single flag hides it. Photos are deleted with their report after 30 days.
- Notes are public. Please do not put names, license plates, or phone numbers in them. The app refuses links, email addresses, and phone numbers, and anyone can flag a note so it is hidden after a few reports.
- Reports disappear from the app after about 6 hours and are deleted from our database after 30 days. Automatic backups of the database expire within 7 days after that.
- "Navigate to" opens the map app you pick (Google Maps, Apple Maps or MapQuest) with the trailhead's coordinates, never yours. That app's own privacy policy applies from there.
- Favorites are saved on your phone only. Clearing your browser data removes them.
If you create an account (optional)
- We store your email address, the trailheads you saved, your alert settings, and your sign-in sessions. That is all.
- We use your email only to sign you in and to send the alerts you asked for. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
- We never sell, rent, or share your email with anyone, and we do not send newsletters or marketing.
- Alert emails name the trailhead that was reported on, so anyone reading your inbox could see which trailheads you follow.
- Deleting your account is one tap and removes your email, saved trailheads, alert settings, and sessions immediately. Backups expire within 7 days. Reports are never linked to accounts, so there is nothing else to remove.
No tracking
- No advertising trackers, no analytics services, no tracking cookies, no fingerprinting.
- The only cookie we ever set is a sign-in cookie for people with accounts. It lasts 30 days and is removed when you sign out or delete your account.
- The app sends nothing to social networks, ad companies, or data brokers.
Companies that handle traffic for us
Running a website means a few companies' computers see traffic pass through. They process it on our behalf and are not allowed to use it for their own purposes.
- Cloudflare hosts the app and the database. Like any host, its servers see your internet address and request details while serving the page. We have turned off Cloudflare's per-request logging for this app. Cloudflare's privacy policy.
- OpenFreeMap serves the background map tiles on the Map tab. It sees your internet address and roughly which area of the map you are looking at. It says it does not log addresses by default and sets no cookies. OpenFreeMap's privacy policy.
- Resend delivers our emails (sign-in codes and alerts), only if you create an account. It sees your email address and the email content and keeps copies of sent emails for about 30 days, processed in the United States. We keep its open and click tracking switched off. Resend's privacy policy.
Automatic data we show
Forecasts come from the National Weather Service, snow depth from NRCS SNOTEL stations, and Snoqualmie Pass conditions from WSDOT. Our server fetches these on a schedule and caches them. Nothing about you, not even your request, is sent to those services.
Spam protection
To stop one person from flooding the app, we count how many reports arrive from the same connection within a minute. That count lives on Cloudflare's edge for 60 seconds and is never written down or linked to a report.
Data sources
Trailhead names and locations come from OpenStreetMap contributors under the Open Database License.
